American World No. 3 tennis player, Coco Gauff has accepted the unexpected defeat she suffered to Paula Badosa at the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in Melbourne.
This after she went down 7-5 6-4 which was her first loss of the 2025 season.
Despite being booted out of a chance to bag another Grand Slam title, Gauff congratulated Badosa’s performance.
“Paula was playing great.
You know, maybe some moments in the first set could have gone my way, could have been a different outcome in the first set,” remarked Gauff during a post media briefing.
When asked about how she felt with the loss especially at a significant stage of the tournament, Gauff told reporters that she won’t beat herself up about it.
“It’s tough right after and I’m still disappointed, but I think the way I played, even though it wasn’t my best, I gave it my all on the court, so that’s something to be proud of.
I fought till the end.
Some matches are going to go my way, some are not.
I think it’s just one of those things that maybe a couple of years ago I would feel a lot more crushed and feel the world is ending,” remarked Gauff.
The 20-year-old had a successful 2024 season, where she led Team USA to the second United Cup title victory amongst others.
She expressed optimism on future games, adding that she will intensify the way she plays.
“I have to be aggressive.
I feel like that’s when I’m playing my best.
That’s how I won most of the matches so far, the last few months is by playing aggressive.
I think it’s just being more comfortable with that,” explained the American.
Meanwhile, Badosa’s win over Gauff booked her a place in the semifinals where she’ll play against two-time defending champion, Aryna Sabalenka on Thursday.
