The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) believes it’ll be represented by what it described as a “formidable” team at this year’s Comrades Marathon.
The Department says it will deploy about 270 officials to the much-anticipated race between Pietermaritzburg and Durban on Sunday.
National Commissioner, Makgothi Thobakgale believes they’ll be ready for the race of their lives following intense preparations.
“Our athletes donned in unmistakable Correctional Services colours, have undergone rigorous training in preparation for this iconic race, hence we talk of a team poised to make a bold statement on the road,” said a confident Thobakgale.
The Department is no stranger to the race as it has participated in previous years.
It holds its presence at the event at very high standards and believes sports plays a pivotal role in the wellbeing of its employees.
“Sports contributes to not only physical health, but also enhances workplace performance, discipline and morale.
Officials who participate in various sporting disciplines demonstrate improved focus and productivity in their professional duties,” read a statement from the Department.
Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal officials said it’s all systems go for what will be the 98th comrade’s race where about 22 000 runners are expected to take part.
The provincial government is optimistic that this will not only be a memorable sporting event, but it will significantly boost economical and tourism activities.
