In a bold stance against further complicating the already delicate political landscape, Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen has firmly rejected suggestions to broaden the Government of National Unity (GNU). Speaking at a press briefing today, Steenhuisen expressed concern that adding more parties—such as the MKP and the EFF—would only exacerbate existing challenges within the coalition framework, rather than facilitating effective governance.
Steenhuisen’s remarks come on the heels of recent commentary from the African National Congress (ANC) indicating potential plans to enlarge the coalition. The DA leader, however, emphasised the urgent need for improved collaboration and relations among the existing parties in the GNU. He encouraged a focus on strategies that foster communication and conflict resolution mechanisms—areas he identified as sorely lacking.
“Particularly on how you find ways to consult, how you deal with conflict management and dispute resolution mechanisms that to date remain unavailable,” stated Steenhuisen. He articulated his belief that every minor issue within the coalition escalates into a major conflict due to these deficiencies in communication.
During the briefing, Steenhuisen also unveiled the DA’s strategic plan to stimulate economic growth and job creation. He outlined proposed changes to critical legislation, including Black Economic Empowerment (BEE), Employment Equity, and Expropriation Acts, which he believes are essential in unlocking the economic potential of South Africa.
