City of Tshwane The Executive Mayor Nasiphi Moya has described the state of the metro after the DA’s ouster as a mess.
Moya and her mayoral committee members provided an update of what the new coalition government has achieved in the 8 months in office and said the municipality had almost collapsed.
“ The fact that we inherited an unfunded budget that has not been funded forat least three years, it gives you an idea. The assets under construction to the tune of billions, it tells you that this was a mess,” said Moya of some of the problems she inherited.
The DA was in charge of the City of Tshwane for a good 8 years, a period marked by rapid change of mayors and financial mismanagement leading to the ANC led coalition which includes the EFF and Action SA ( Moyà’s party) to inherit an unfunded budget along with huge debts including to Eskom.
“ The irregular, unauthorised, wasteful, and fruitless expenditure to the tune of 13 billion realms, those are the indicators of the state of the, or the health of the institution that we’ve inherited,” said the mayor.
With former mayor Celliers Brink now leading the DA caucus from the opposition benches, the blue party has been vocal in criticising the new administration which it describes as a doomsday coalition including mobilising communities to reject its decisions, an act that Moya believes is aimed preventing her team from uncovering some of the wrong things done by her once ally and now arch rival.
“ You would have seen that when westart to enforce bylaws, you have political parties that are encouraging residents to be lawless. When we are actually doing this for the sake of public safety, that when you are saying no informal trader can trade without a health certificate, to us what it means is that, assure us that you know what the rules are and how to protect the clients that we are serving.When we did that, you heard the previous administration jumping up and down and saying this is, you know, this is not acceptable. Now ask yourself, the things that we are discovering,whether they hijack buildings, whether the shops, you know, in Hazelwood and in, you know, and in Brooklyn Mall, those shops are not complying. Who was enforcing bylaws? Who was looking? And so those are the things for me that I’m saying, we’re not gonna say to residents because we don’t want to stress the residents.We’re always going to tell residents the progress that we are making. But when it’s the same political parties that have led the city to the state of (2:04) collapse that it is in, we can’t keep quiet because now they want to reinvent history. While we are every single day, we are dealing with the mess that they have left,” said the mayor during the briefing held at Rooiwaal Power Station outside Hamanskraal.
Brink is adamant that Moya and her MAYCO’s regular bylaw enforcement campaigns are nothing more than publicity stunts and bullying of traders.
Big business has not been spared in the crackdown by the mayor and her team with entities such as large supermarket outlet Spar having had their doors shut for non compliance.
The city said the visit to strategic infrastructure projects was part of a drive to make sure the metro is investor friendly and is able to sustainably provide services to residents and the business community.
