The ANC has confirmed that its former deputy president David Mabuza, who also served as the country’s number two has passed on at the age of 64.
Mabuza earned a reputation as a strongman during successive terms as Mpumalanga ANC Provincial Chairperson and Premier.
ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula confirmed Mabuza’s passing through a post on X.
“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we learn of the passing of former Deputy President of the Republic and stalwart of our movement, Comrade David Dabede Mabuza,” said Mbalula in the post.
Mbalula said Mabuza, affectionately known as DD or the Cat because of his survival instincts had dedicated his entire life to serving the ANC.
“Comrade Mabuza dedicated his life to the service of the people of South Africa. From his days in the struggle against apartheid to his leadership as Premier of Mpumalanga and later as Deputy President, he was a committed cadre who carried the values of unity, discipline, and transformation,” said Mbalula.
Action SA Leader Herman Mashaba said Mabuza played a significant role in the politics of South Africa.
“Having served the Republic in various senior roles, including as Premier of Mpumalanga and ultimately as Deputy President, Mabuza was a significant figure in South African political life. His contributions and influence spanned decades and will leave a lasting mark on our country’s democratic journey,” said Mashaba in a statement.
“RISE Mzansi joins the people of South Africa in mourning the death of former Deputy President David Dabede ‘DD’ Mabuza, who occupied the east wing of the Union Buildings from 2018 to 2023. Mabuza was a freedom fighter, seasoned politician, unionist and operator. ‘The Cat’ is no more,” said Rise Mzansi Leader Songezo Zibi in his message of condolences.
Mabuza is the only one post 1994 who served as deputy president but never contested the presidency.
