The Amapiano vs Afrobeats controversy seems far from over, following SA producer, DJ Maphorisa’s recent utterances.
Phori, as he’s popularly known, took to the socials to tip Nigerian DJs on how best to play the genre.
“Amapiano shouldn’t be rushed.
A 160 bpm is too high.
Please bring it down to 130,’’ he pointed out, during an Instagram live.
The Izolo hitmaker implored them to play the songs softer, with a suggested 115 bpm speed.
Mzansi fans also jumped in on the convo, with many of them backing Phori.
@MaMntungwa commented with laughing emojis, “They really do speed up the tempo it’s crazy.’’
@Mxja_Trxll added “DJ Maphorisa has a valid point, almost every club you go to in Sandton, Rivonia and Fourways, the DJs play Amapiano on a high bpm and it doesn’t sound original.’’
The Yanos gained popularity in Nigeria around 2017 after Niniola experimented with the sound in her Maradona hit song.
Despite the controversy, Mzansi has had successful collabos with Nigerian artists in the genre.
The big releases include Unavailable by Davido featuring Musa Keys and Sponono by Kabza de Small where he was joined by Nigeria’s greats, Burna Boy and Wizkid.
The Yanos have gained the global nod many times with stars like Rihanna, Wiz Khalifa, Rae Sremmurd, Chris Brown and soccer legend Cristiano Ronaldo found jamming to the hits.
The genre’s popularity can also be attributed to TikTok dance challenges.
