American rapper and singer, Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, popularly known as Doja Cat, shared a ‘proudly South African’ moment during her performance at the Global Citizen Festival that was held in New York City, USA, on Saturday.
The Woman hitmaker wore a sparkling open flow dress that resembled the Mzansi flag with all its six colours.
The look went viral on X, and users praised her for embracing her heritage, despite an alleged complicated relationship with her popular actor father, Dumisani Dlamini.
This as she has openly criticised him and accused him of not fulfilling his role as a parent.
Although she hasn’t committed to a show in Mzansi, her festival dress gave fans some hope that she might land this side.
Amongst those who showed her some love was the Head of Public Diplomacy for the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, Clayson Monyela.
“Thank you for flying the SA flag on the global stage Doja Cat. South Africa will always be home,’’ captioned Monyela on the repost of the singer’s festival picture.
Known for breaking barriers through fashion and music, Doja Cat impressed her fans when she used her platform at the fair to address some global crises.
“Right now, millions of women, children and men in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan and across the world are suffering.
In times like this it’s important to remember that together we have the power to bring change, love, light and hope to those who need it most.
I join forces with Global Citizen to help people in areas of conflict and crises,’’ explained the singer.
Doja Cat seems to be quite intentional when taking pride in her SA roots lately.
Her national flag dress follows a video where she is seen showing off what appeared to be Maskandi dance moves went viral a few days ago.
All of this precedes the iconic Coachella performance earlier this year, where she was joined by SA vocal group, The Joy.
They incorporated isiZulu in the lyrics of two of her tracks Acknowledge Me and Shutcho.
