Donald Trump confident of buyers as TikTok ban looms

As the deadline for the Chinese owner, ByteDance to sell social media video app, TikTok, draws closer, US President, Donal Trump is adamant that a deal will be reached ahead of the cutoff date.

The deadline for ByteDance to sell TikTok to a non-Chinese buyer or face a total ban from the US, was extended from January to 05 April 2025, which will be on Saturday.

This past weekend Trump revealed to reporters that a significant amount of interest to buy the app has been shown.

“We have a lot of potential buyers. There’s tremendous interest in TikTok.  The decision will be mine through Congress. We have a great team of people taking bids, we have a lot of people who want to buy TikTok.  We are also dealing with China because they may have something to do with it. I’d like to see TikTok remain alive,” said Trump.

He continued to rave about how much TikTok aided his 2025 Presidential run, where he claims to have won youth votes by 36 points.

The ultimatum to ban the app if a suitable buyer is not found, emanates from national security concerns raised by the US, as it fears that the Chinese government could use the app to spy on Americans.

The prohibition of TikTok will affect about 170 million users in the US.
