The DA’s 8 year grip on the now troubled City of Tshwane is finally over.
This following a deal between the ANC, EFF, Action SA, ATM and several other smaller parties.
These are the parties that ousted the DA’s Celliers Brink through a motion of no confidence last month.
The agreement chose Action SA’s Dr Nasiphi Moya as the new mayor of the capital.
Moya was acting in the position following the removal of Brink who was the DA’s 5th mayor in a period of 8 years and was in office for a little over two years.
ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu Motsiri announced the decision alongside Gauteng provincial chairperson Panyaza Lesufi who is also the Premier, EFF Provincial chairperson Nkululeko Dunga and Action SA leader Herman Mashaba.
“We must say that Action SA never said it’s Dr Moya or nothing. There was humility in the talks. After careful consideration of the work that needs to be done to stabilise the city, we as the ANC has resolved to endorse the candidacy of Dr Nasiphi Moya of Action SA to take over as the new mayor of Tshwane as we start the process of returning services to our people,” said Bhengu Motsiri.
Voting was expected to take place via secret ballot with the DA nominating Brink as its candidate.
Bhengu-Motsiri said Moya was currently the best candidate for the position.
“She has been acting in the position for some time and we have all seen her commitment to serving the people of Tshwane and we think with 18 months or so remaining to the elections it is important to ensure continuity and Dr Moya is best suited to do that,” she said.
