As pressure mounts on Israel to end its bombardment of Palestine along with the continued occupation, the EFF has set its sights on Israel’s commercial interests in South Africa.

The party marched on the Israel embassy on Monday and called for complete isolation of the Zionist state including products it produces.

Party leader Julius Malema singled out McDonalds and Woolworths to distance themselves from “apartheid Israel” or face confrontation,

“McDonalds is giving the soldiers of Israel food in Israel. We want McDonalds South Africa to distance itself from what is happening in Israel. They have until the end of this month,”  said Malema. A reference to McDonalds’ supply of food to Israeli servicemen engaged in attacks on Gaza, in which several thousand people have been killed and more than a million displaced.

“Comrades, Woolworths has got a responsibility by the end of this month to remove every product on their shelves that comes from Israel. Remove all Israel made products from your shelves by the end of this month, or we will remove them ourselves,” he said.

The ANC Youth League made a similar call against Woolworths during a picket at the embassy on Friday and while the government has condemned Israel over both the bombardment and occupation of Palestine, it has not called for sanctions.
