The future of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi hangs in the balance amid serious allegations linking him to controversial businessman and attempted murder accused Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.
Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza has confirmed receiving an internal report detailing the misconduct claims, though he declined to discuss the findings publicly, citing ongoing council processes.
“The report is now being processed in council. We have received it,” said Xhakaza. “As I have indicated, this is an in-committee meeting. We might not necessarily be able to pronounce, but the administration is now seized with the matter. I’m certain that in the next day or two we should be able to issue.”
Sources within council say Mkhwanazi could be placed under precautionary suspension pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings.
The allegations include claims that Mkhwanazi used his official position to equip Matlala’s private vehicles with EMPD blue lights, a move council members described as a gross abuse of power.
An urgent motion was reportedly tabled in council this week, calling for immediate action against Mkhwanazi over his alleged involvement with Matlala, who is at the centre of a series of high-profile investigations.
Mayor Xhakaza said due process will be followed in line with the South African Local Government Bargaining Council’s disciplinary procedures.
“The disciplinary proceeding will have to take effect without fear or favour. We remain committed to transparency, restoring trust in our communities, and reinforcing the values of good governance that underpin our renewal agenda,” he said.
If confirmed, Mkhwanazi’s suspension would mark another major test for the City of Ekurhuleni’s efforts to clean up internal corruption and restore public confidence in its policing and governance structures.
