Four toddlers ranging from two years and below have died following a fire at a house in Mayfair, Johannesburg.
According to the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS), its team responded to the incident around 11H00.
“On arrival firefighters found the house we’ll alight and started conducting firefighting operations.
While conducting a search and rescue operation four bodies of young kids ranging from two-years and below were recovered.
Unfortunately, they were confirmed dead on scene by Gauteng EMS Paramedics, and they might have suffered smoke inhalation during this fire incident,” said EMS spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi.
In addition, Mulaudzi said the cause of the fire incident is believed to be a heating device which was used in the house before the fire started.
The EMS Fire Investigation team is on site conducting preliminary investigations.
The fire comes after the earlier warning issued by EMS, cautioning residents to exercise caution when using heating devices, after the South African Weather Services issued a warning for extremely cold temperatures in most parts of the country from Wednesday towards the end of the week.
