In a heartfelt tribute, friends and family members gathered at the San Salvador Catholic Church in Leondale, Germiston, to celebrate the life of acclaimed journalist Tshidi Madia, who passed away last week following a short illness. The outpouring of love and admiration demonstrated the profound impact Madia had throughout her career and personal life, solidifying her legacy as a passionate storyteller and advocate for transformation.
The atmosphere at the funeral service was vibrant, with attendees encouraged to don bold and bright colours in honour of Madia’s joyful spirit. Floral patterns and vivid hues filled the church as a testament to the vibrant personality that characterised her work as an EWN associate politics editor.
Amidst the bustle of grieving friends, family, colleagues, and government officials, poignant tributes were shared, echoing the sentiment that Madia was not only an exceptional journalist but a loving, warm, and compassionate individual. Her closest friends and family took to the podium to share cherished memories, reflecting on the incredible life Madia led.
Her friend, Lizeka Tandwa, aptly summarised Madia’s unique achievements, noting: “What is funny about Tshidi is that she interviewed every president living or dead but she doesn’t have a single award. No one can say she has an award for best story.” Despite this lack of formal accolades, Tandwa suggested that Madia’s impactful career was deserving of a lifetime award.
Silas Madia, the father of the late editor, delivered a touching eulogy describing his daughter as a jewel with a heart of gold. He expressed deep sorrow over her passing, sharing cherished lessons she imparted, stating, “You taught me patience, laughter, and the purest kind of love for that I will always be grateful. Our home will never be the same; we already miss your loud voice that brought joy and life into the house.”
The authenticity of Madia’s character shone through her colleagues’ tributes, who painted a picture of a fearless journalist dedicated to storytelling. They recalled her tenacity, vivacity, and an adventurous spirit that inspired others. Former broadcast journalist and current Department of Tourism Spokesperson, Aldrin Sampear, expressed deep gratitude, stating, “Friend, thank you for the love that you have given me and the kindness that you have extended to me and the people around you,” before acknowledging how Madia had been a stabilising force within their friendship.
Tshidi Madia’s legacy is one of resilience, warmth, and social commitment. She leaves behind an indelible mark within the fabric of South African journalism, serving not only as a reporter but also as a beacon of hope for transformation in the media landscape.
