Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has declared the province fully prepared to host the upcoming G20 Leaders Summit, which is set to take place later this month.
Speaking during a provincial media briefing on the state of readiness, Lesufi detailed the extensive measures being implemented to ensure the success of the high-profile global event, which will bring together world leaders, international delegations, and thousands of participants.
Central to the province’s preparations is a robust safety and security plan designed to maintain order and protect both delegates and residents throughout the summit period. Lesufi emphasised that Gauteng law enforcement agencies, in collaboration with national counterparts, have finalised coordinated security strategies to safeguard all venues and major transport routes.
To prevent traffic disruptions and ensure smooth movement across the province, Lesufi announced a dedicated, integrated traffic management plan involving all metropolitan police units and municipal traffic services. “We have introduced a comprehensive plan to ensure that we don’t have long traffic jams or create blockages en route to the summit,” he said.
He added that the provincial Department of Transport has engaged extensively with the taxi industry to align operations with the summit’s transport needs. “This includes addressing informal taxi ranks and communicating planned road closures well in advance,” Lesufi explained.
The G20 Summit is expected to inject a major economic boost into the province while showcasing Gauteng’s capacity to host world-class international events efficiently and securely.
