The Head of the Gauteng Department of Health and Wellness, Lesiba Malotana, has been suspended with immediate effect as investigations intensify into alleged large-scale corruption at the Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi announced the suspension on Monday, confirming that Dr Darion Barclay has been appointed to act in the position. Barclay currently serves as the head of the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CogGTA).
In a statement, the Gauteng Provincial Government said the move underscores its full support for the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and other law enforcement agencies probing irregularities in the hospital’s tender processes.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to root out maladministration and to uphold the highest standards of accountability and ethical leadership,” the statement read.
Lesufi expressed confidence in Dr Barclay’s ability to lead the department during this transitional period, emphasizing the need for stability and service delivery continuity.
“Dr Barclay, who currently leads CogGTA, will ensure stability and continuity in this critical department. His appointment highlights the importance of prioritising seamless service delivery,” Lesufi said.
The SIU’s investigation has so far uncovered irregular tenders estimated at around R2 billion, linked to a complex network of fraud and corruption at Tembisa Hospital. The probe has led to raids at the homes of alleged syndicate members accused of siphoning public funds through fraudulent contracts.
Lesufi is expected to brief provincial authorities soon on progress in recovering the funds lost through corruption at Tembisa Hospital and other health facilities across the province.
