The Gauteng Department of Health has called on the public to use antibiotics responsibly as part of Antimicrobial Awareness Week, warning that misuse of medication is contributing to growing antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), AMR occurs when bacteria or viruses evolve to resist treatment, making infections harder to control and increasing the risk of severe illness and death.
In a statement, the department urged residents to follow safety guidelines when using antibiotics.
“Only take antibiotics prescribed by a qualified health professional. Never share or use leftover medication, avoid demanding antibiotics for viral infections such as colds or flu, and always follow the instructions provided,” it said.
The department also encouraged the public to stay up to date with vaccinations and practice good hygiene, noting that prevention reduces the demand for antibiotics.
Environmental protection was also highlighted as a key factor.
“Avoiding water pollution helps limit the emergence of resistant pathogens,” the statement added.
Despite concerns over the global rise of AMR, the Gauteng Department of Health remains confident that the issue can be managed through responsible antibiotic use and effective medical treatment.
