The Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP) said it will intensify law enforcement operations across the province to ensure that holidaymakers return safely from the festive season. This as major routes in the province are expected to be busy as holidaymakers return to the province following the festive season break.
According to the GTP spokesperson, Sello Maremane, the heightened traffic police visibility is aimed at ensuring road safety, reduce road crashes and fatalities along the major routes in the province.
To date, a total of 290 people have lost their lives due to road fatalities in Gauteng since the beginning of the festive season.
Majority of the of fatalities are as a result of pedestrian jay walking, unsafe overtaking, speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as reckless and negligent driving,” said Maremane.
He highlighted that the operations will be conducted together with other law enforcement officials to curb lawlessness, ensure that motorists adhere to the road rules while eliminating criminal elements.
Maremane said the province is also expect high traffic volumes from routes coming from other provinces.
“Routes that are expected to be busy include, N1 Polokwane to Pretoria, N3 Durban to Johannesburg, N1 Bloemfontein to Johannesburg, N4 Emalahleni to Pretoria, N12 Potchefstroom to Johannesburg, and R573 Pretoria Moloto Road amongst others,” explained Maremane.
