In a shocking incident that reflects the ongoing dangers faced by law enforcement personnel, two out of five traffic wardens who were shot during a routine patrol in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, are now in critical condition. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi provided an update on the wardens’ conditions, expressing deep concern for their wellbeing.
The shooting occurred on Sunday at the Daveyton Railway Station when the wardens attempted to search a group of 12 individuals. As they initiated their checks, they came under fire, resulting in a violent encounter that left several wardens injured.
During a media briefing following his visit to the hospital, Premier Lesufi confirmed the state of the injured wardens. “One of the wardens remains unconscious in the intensive care unit, while the other, thankfully, has regained consciousness but is also still in ICU,” he stated. The gravity of their injuries underscores the perilous environment in which these officers operate daily.
Lesufi expressed his support for the injured officers, noting, “I managed to exchange some greetings with her and to indicate our support.” Encouragingly, he indicated that two additional wardens are recovering well and may be discharged soon, though they are still under medical care.
The driver involved in the incident has been discharged but continues to bear physical effects from the shooting, with a bullet lodged in his shoulder. Lesufi highlighted the importance of proper medical advice, stating that the driver has been advised to take it easy and await further evaluations from medical teams.
