The Black Business Council (BBC) has welcomed the Eskom board’s decision to let De Ruyter go with immediate effect saying in a statement that “Mr De Ruyter has been a monumental failure who brought the economy of South Africa to its knees.

“The BBC is of the view that he should have vacated his position the day he tendered his resignation as he had nothing positive to hand-over to the new Group CEO.

“The country is facing a serious electricity crisis since the establishment of Eskom and must focus all its energies in improving the Energy Availability Factor. Mr De Ruyter’s unnecessary attention-seeking noise was becoming an irritating distraction that the country doesn’t need.

“The BBC urges the Eskom Board and the shareholder Minister to consider appointing a team of experienced competent professionals to steer the ship in the interim while the appointment of a GCEO is in progress. The security and sustainability of electricity should be the first priority,” said the council in a statement released this morning.
