The Department of Emergency Medical Services in the North West is appealing to residents to take precautions amid the current heatwave that is anticipated to last until Sunday.

According to the warning issued by the South African Weather Service, provinces that will be affected also include Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and the Free State. Among others, residents are urged to stay hydrated.

‘’The North West Emergency Medical Services urges the public to take precautionary measures. To stay away from prolonged and physical direct sunlight. Ensure children play under the shade, wear light clothes and if indoors ensure that rooms are well ventilated and stay safe,” said acting Operational Manager, Letlhogonolo Masu.

Rustenburg and Mahikeng are expected to peak the highest at 37 degrees celsius followed by Potchefstroom at 36.

The weather service also alerted the public about dehydration, heat exhaustion, possible heat stroke and heat-related loss of livestock or crops.

“The North West province is set to be fine and hot to very hot, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon,” warned the weather service.
