Residents of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal should prepare to endure the heat a bit longer because heatwaves are anticipated to last in certain regions of the nation until Tuesday, according to the SA Weather Service (SAWS).
Forecaster Mbavhi Maliage stated that “we will watch the situation as to how the temperatures are looking for today [Monday] and tomorrow [Tuesday],” and should it be necessary for us to prolong the heatwave [warning], we will do so and put out another alert.
However, rain is predicted for this week in other regions of the nation. Maliage predicted that scattered showers would occur on Monday in some areas of the Northern Cape, North West, Eastern Cape, Free State, and Western Cape. In the late afternoon, showers are predicted across Mpumalanga’s and Limpopo’s eastern regions.
She continued by predicting that a cold front on Tuesday morning would bring showers and rain to the Western Cape’s coastal regions, which would later expand to the South Coast.
Isolated thunderstorms will occur in the afternoon in portions of the Free State, North West, Northern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal.
Earlier today it was reported that at least eight people died of heat stroke in the Northern Cape after a heatwave that hit the province over the week.
Farm workers bore the brunt of the sweltering temperatures, exacerbated by the ongoing blackouts. According to Northern Cape MEC for Agriculture, Mase Manopole, one farmer passed away on Sunday and five more farms were affected in the Kakamas area.
