The high court in Pretoria resumed proceedings on Wednesday, as lead investigator Bongani Gininda took the stand for further examination. This pivotal case, which has gripped South Africa since the tragic assassination of soccer star Senzo Meyiwa nearly a decade ago, remains fraught with unanswered questions, chief among them: what was the motive behind this high-profile murder?

During a rigorous cross-examination, Gininda indicated that investigators are still grappling with the fundamental question of why Meyiwa was targeted on that fateful night in October 2014, in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni. The challenges of establishing a clear motive highlight the complexities surrounding the investigation, which has seen various twists and turns over the years, often leading to public frustration over the lack of closure in such a widely publicised case.

Meyiwa, a celebrated goalkeeper for Orlando Pirates and the national football team, was gunned down while attending a friend’s house. His death shocked the nation and ignited fervent calls for justice, as fans, colleagues, and family members mourned the loss of a rising star in South African football.

As the court proceedings unfold, many remain hopeful that this latest wave of testimonies might finally pave the way toward clarity and justice for Meyiwa’s loved ones and the broader community. With Gininda at the forefront of the investigation, spectators are eager to see if he can shed more light on the events leading to that tragic night and the myriad questions surrounding it.
