In preparation for the legalisation of the Fourth Decimal Coin Series of South Africa on 1 January 2023, the South African Reserve Bank has gazetted new designs.

The cabinet approved the new dimensions, designs, and compilation of the coins during a virtual meeting on 31 August.

There will be a key change in the next series of coins, as the word “South Africa” will be printed on one side.

All official languages will be printed on the coins on a rotational basis over a specified period of time. Each year, the languages will alternate for the next ten years.

In addition to the various coin varieties, the following languages will be minted:

  • R5 – three languages will be used;
  • R2, 50c, and 10c – two languages will be used;
  • R1 – only one language will be used.
