The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) claimed on Wednesday that its humanitarian aid vessels were “under attack” by the Israeli military while en route to the besieged enclave of Gaza. The daring mission aimed to breach the naval blockade that has stifled life in the region, delivering much-needed supplies amidst ongoing violence and devastation.
The FFC, an international assembly of pro-Palestinian activist groups, has organised civilian maritime missions aimed at providing essential humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population. In a rapidly escalating situation, several boats were reportedly intercepted by Israeli forces, which resulted in the transfer of both vessels and activists to an Israeli port. According to a statement from Israel’s foreign ministry, the passengers are expected to face deportation following their apprehension.
“Another futile attempt to breach the legal naval blockade and enter a combat zone ended in nothing,” the foreign ministry stated on social media platform X, reflecting the aggressive stance taken by Israel against maritime efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
This recent incident follows closely on the heels of a similar operation, where Israel halted approximately 40 vessels and detained over 450 activists associated with the Global Sumud Flotilla. As reported by the FFC, the Israeli military employed jamming techniques, and at least two boats were boarded during this confrontation.
The FFC asserted on Instagram, “The Israeli military has no legal jurisdiction over international waters. Our flotilla poses no harm.” This statement highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding international humanitarian missions aimed at addressing critical needs within Gaza.
The flotilla was reportedly carrying aid valued at over $110,000, including vital medications, respiratory equipment, and nutritional supplies critical for Gaza’s hospitals, which are struggling to cope with a dire humanitarian situation.
Gaza’s health authorities have reported harrowing statistics, indicating that around 67,000 people have perished and the region has been ravaged in the wake of Israel’s military response following the October 7 attack led by Palestinian militants. In contrast, Israel has reported approximately 1,200 fatalities and the taking of 251 individuals as hostages during the assault.
