After losing to France in Marseille, the Springboks are now zero for three on their 2022 Outgoing Tour if South Africa A’s loss to Munster is taken into account. However, Jacques Nienaber has come under fire for the Boks’ win percentage against tier-one opposition despite narrow losses to the top two sides in the world.
During a press conference on Monday, assistant coach Deon Davids scoffed at the notion that the Boks would sacrifice results for progress in preparation for the 2023 World Cup.
Davids said his team plays for a win in every Test match. Players showed a drive for a good result in the last two games, if you look at the effort they put forth. “No matter who wears the jersey, our approach will be the same for Italy and England. It is our goal to win these games.”
According to Davids, who was joined at the press conference by Salmaan Moerat, the young second rower is likely to face Italy in Genoa on Saturday for a shot at a place in the World Cup.
“In the past couple of games, we have received a number of answers, both from the point of view of the players and selection. As part of that specific process, we will continue.
“Salmaan’s presence, for example, indicates that he will be participating, regardless of whether he starts or sits on the bench. Taking part in the World Cup in this way is part of our vision. There is a lot of respect for Italy, as well as great faith in the players.”
