Former Kaizer Chiefs captain and goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has opened about the sombre experience he went through after he came was informed that the club will not be renewing his playing contract.

“It wasn’t easy for me to digest the news. I stayed in bed for two straight weeks crying every day. I did not understand what was happening, yet I was given the respect by the team which sat me down and told me about their plan but unfortunately, you’re not part of it as a footballer,” Khune shared with the media.

The veteran goalkeeper was reportedly requested by Chiefs to consider if he will pursue his next career move within the club or leave entirely but is yet to announce his official decision. Khune has built a strong legacy for himself and Amakhosi during his 25-year stay in Naturena. His accolades include being the second most-capped Bafana Bafana player with 92 caps, 12 trophies and the rare title for a goalkeeper of the 2012/13 Footballer of the Season. Khune recently made the news after sports betting company Top Bet confirmed him as a partner and shareholder of the business.Although he expressed eagerness to explore different opportunities that lie ahead for him in this business venture, the 37-year-old remains optimistic to get back on the pitch again.

“The passion and love for the game is still there.I can still deliver when called upon. Look at Dennis Onyango. I’m younger than him and he’s still playing at Mamelodi Sundowns,” added Khune.

During his tenure on the field, the Tshing-born goalkeeper represented the country at the 2008 AFCON, 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup and the unforgettable 2010 FIFA World Cup.
