In the midst of a highly-publicised doping controversy, Briton Jack Draper has come forward to defend world number one tennis player Jannik Sinner, asserting that the Italian does not deserve the negative scrutiny he has received following his recent three-month ban. The situation has drawn attention after Sinner accepted a suspension in February as part of an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which had appealed a tribunal’s earlier decision that cleared him following two positive tests.
The 23-year-old Sinner, a three-time Grand Slam champion, has not stepped onto the court since his triumph at the Australian Open in January. In a joint interview with the Guardian and BBC, Draper, who is also 23 and currently ranks sixth in the world, shared his candid thoughts on Sinner’s character, casting a stark contrast to the controversy swirling around him.
“When people ask about him, or anyone, I’ll tell the truth. I think Jannik is a really, really genuine, nice person,” Draper remarked, highlighting the player’s integrity. “In this situation, I’m sure that he would have absolutely zero idea of anything. That’s just the way life goes, sometimes there are mistakes,” he added, advocating for empathy and understanding in the face of adversity.
Draper’s support for Sinner comes after the Italian was cleared to resume training on April 13, following his ban. The two players have had the chance to practice together at the Tennis Club de Beaulieu in France. Reflections on their sessions showcased Draper’s admiration for Sinner’s abilities. “If you can train with anyone, it’s got to be probably the best in the world, right?” he expressed, emphasising his respect for Sinner’s talent despite the circumstances.
“He’s obviously had a bit of time off, but he’s playing at an incredible level still,” Draper continued, underlining the anticipation for Sinner’s return to the professional circuit. “I’m looking forward to having him back on the tour, because I think his presence has been missed. It was great to be with him for a few days and get some good sparring.”
As the tennis world awaits Sinner’s comeback, Draper’s heartfelt endorsement serves as a reminder of the human element often overshadowed by controversy. Within the domain of competitive sports, it is crucial to acknowledge the players behind the headlines and the values of kindness and integrity they represent.
