Convicted murderer Janusz Walus will spend another night in his cell after an agreement between his legal team and the State attorney that his medical parole will be finalised after he gets a clearance from his medical doctor, the Department of Correctional Services said in a short statement last night.
The Constitutional Court ruled last week through Chief Justice Raymond Zondo that Minister Ronald Lamola must place Walus on parole after spending 25 years of his life sentence in prison for killing anti-apartheid leader Chris Hani in 1993.
Walus, Hani’s assassin approached the Constitutional Court in 2020 after the Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed his leave to appeal a high court judgment that had earlier upheld Lamola’s refusal of parole.
The 69-year-old Polish immigrant was expected to be released on Thursday, however, his medical condition is still unknown after sustaining injuries when he was stabbed by another inmate earlier this week.
Political parties and civil organizations took to the streets this week to march against the release of Walus with the EFF being the latest to demonstrate against the ConCourt’s decision by blocking the N1 highway in Gauteng on Thursday.
