The City of Johannesburg will on Wednesday launch a landmark CEO–City Cleanup Programme, aimed at restoring the city’s infrastructure, improving service delivery, and reviving civic pride.
Mayor Dada Morero says the initiative marks a “moment of truth” for Johannesburg, bringing together government, business leaders, and communities in a collective effort to reverse years of urban decay and service backlogs.
“This is more than a campaign — it’s a partnership to restore Johannesburg’s glory,” Morero said. “Leadership is not about position; it’s about participation.”
The programme will begin with cleanup and revitalisation work in the Inner City, Braamfontein, Hillbrow, Berea, Yeoville, and Kliptown — identified as key economic and cultural precincts.
The initiative builds on the success of the City’s Bomb Squad, a rapid-response team launched in June 2025 to accelerate service delivery. In its first 100 days, the team achieved an 86% resolution rate across 42 major service issues, including restoring power, fixing sewer lines, and clearing illegal dumping sites.
Morero says the city is seeing growing confidence from residents and business chambers, who have praised improved responsiveness and visible results.
“This is not a one-day campaign,” Morero said. “It’s the beginning of a sustained partnership to make Johannesburg clean, safe, and globally competitive again.”
