Mayor Dada Morero has officially reopened Lilian Ngoyi Street, formerly Bree Street, marking a fresh chapter for the city’s bustling inner-core. This revitalisation effort comes after a severe gas explosion in July 2023, which led to the closure of the vital thoroughfare for nearly five months, affecting both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
The reopening signifies the successful completion of Phase 1 of a R192 million rehabilitation project, aimed at restoring and enhancing the functionality of a key route in Johannesburg’s central business district (CBD). The overhaul has brought modern features, including reconstructed underground services, reinforced paving, and stylish street furniture, transforming the area into a safer and more accessible environment for local residents and visitors alike.
During the vibrant inauguration ceremony, Mayor Morero praised the project as a clear commitment to creating a “walkable, safe, and sustainable inner city,” further highlighting that the enhancements not only improve aesthetics but also serve to invigorate local businesses which faced disruptions during the closure. Increased foot traffic is anticipated, signalling a much-needed rebound for traders in the precinct.
