The case of rape, assault and attempted murder against TV presenter and musician, Molemo Maarohanye, popularly known as Jub Jub, has been postponed to 11 December by the Johannesburg Magistrates Court.
Jub Jub handed himself over to the police in July, after a warrant of arrest was issued for incidents that allegedly took place in 2006 and 2009.
Magistrate Betty Khumalo postponed the matter to allow further consultation between Maarohanye’s legal representative and the state prosecutor.
“This matter is remanded to 11 December at 08:30am. Your bail is extended and you’re warned to be back in court on the said date. It is still a provincial remand because further particulars have been sought out by your legal representative and that the state still needs more time to consult with the witnesses,” ordered Khumalo.
Maarohanye’s bail of R10 000 was also extended. Meanwhile, the Magistrates refused to change the date for the next court appearance, after the musician informed the court through his lawyer that he will not be available at that time.
He informed the court that he will be on a countrywide tour at that time. She slammed his legal representative for not properly consulting with his client regarding the available dates.
“I’m not inclined to change my order. If your client is not available, a warrant of arrest will be authorised.”
Following a complaint from the defence and prosecutor about leaked witnesses’ statements that have been published in the media, Khumalo issued an order that this must not happen again.
“When the matter is still pending, sub-judice, this information should not be leaked on who is going to testify. That is unheard of and discouraged by this court. If there’s anybody who has leaked the information, it is condemned and contemptuous to the court. Should that person be bound out, I’ll do an inquiry so that appropriate information can be taken against the person,” said Khumalo.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the musician is facing 13 charges that include multiple counts of rape, indecent assault, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and several counts of kidnapping.
