Kokosi residents threaten shutdown over crippling water shortages

Residents of Kokosi township in southern Gauteng are gearing up for a showdown with local authorities as they threaten to shut down the area if their dire water situation is not addressed by Friday. With access to clean water becoming an arduous daily struggle, frustrations are boiling over as the Merafong Municipality grapples with an alarming R1.4 billion debt to Rand Water.

The township, which has been plagued by water shortages for months, recently witnessed residents taking action by blocking the provincial road in protest. This public demonstration underlines the growing desperation felt by locals, as many are forced to rely on contaminated sources, risking their health and well-being.

“We are tired of promises and empty words. Our children deserve better than to walk long distances for water, and we will do whatever it takes to make sure our voices are heard,” said one frustrated resident, voicing the sentiment shared across the township.

According to Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo, the ongoing negotiations between Rand Water and the Merafong Municipality have hit a deadlock. “After months of deliberation, the two parties could not find an amicable solution. The municipality has continuously refused to honour its account with Rand Water,” Maroo stated. She further explained that the bulk water supply remains reduced, severely impacting the provision to towns like Kokosi.

The repercussions of the municipality’s financial woes are reaching critical levels. “To date, the municipality owes Rand Water over R1.4 billion. The situation is highly untenable and destabilises Rand Water’s financial position as it poses a direct threat to its medium- and long-term sustainability,” Maroo added.

The looming deadline has residents on edge, and many are prepared to escalate their protests if no solution is forthcoming. The call for unity among community members has resounded, with groups rallying for change and transparency in government actions regarding essential services.

Community leaders are urging the municipality to prioritise negotiations with Rand Water and others involved, stressing the immediate need for a sustainable solution to restore water supply.
