South Africa’s theatre producer, choreographer, and musician Mbongeni Ngema has died following a head on collision in Mbizana, Eastern Cape between a truck and a sedan that he was traveling in. The 68-year-old Ngema passed away while being transferred to the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital.Two other people were injured in the accident and taken to nearby health facilities. In a statement, the family confirmed the passing of the theatre producer and director.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved brother, father, husband, and a patriot, Mbongeni Ngema. Ngema was killed in a head-on car accident whilst returning from attending a funeral in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape this evening (Wednesday). He was a passenger in the vehicle,” read a statement from the family.
The statement described him as renowned playwright, actor, choreographer, composer, and singer. Ngema is credited for Sarafina, Asinamali, Woza Albert and the hit song, Isitimela Sase Zola. He received several accolades such as Lifetime Achievement Awards in the South African Music Awards and the Naledi Theatre Awards. He was nominated for Grammy and Tony Award through his work in Sarafina and The Lion King. Meanwhile, the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Zizi Kodwa, has expressed has sadness on the passing of Ngema.
“With the passing of Dr Mbongeni Ngema, South Africa has lost one of its great playwrights, composers, lyricists, directors, and musicians. Dr Ngema’s word was celebrated in South Africa and internationally.At a critical time in the liberation struggle against apartheid, Dr Ngema took the plays Woza Albert, Asinamali and Sarafina to international stages. These productions not only showcased South African talent, but also narrated to the world the experiences of South Africans who were ostracised and brutalised under apartheid,” said Kodwa.
The family said it will share further details about the funeral arrangements in due course.
