The corruption and money laundering case against former speaker of National Assembly, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, has been transferred to the Pretoria High Court to 16 October 2024 for pre-trial conference.

This as she appeared before the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court today, where the state served her with an indictment to prepare for the high court proceedings.

Mapisa-Nqakula is facing 12 counts of corruption and one of money laundering.

“These charges relate to her tenure between 2016 and 2019 when she was the minister of defence, wherein she allegedly received and solicited approximately R4,5 million from a service provider to the department, of which R2,1 was received in cash.

She is currently out on R50 000 bail and is expected to appear at the Pretoria High Court in October,” said the spokesperson of the Investigating Directorate of the National Prosecuting Authority, Henry Mamothame.

Mapisa-Nqakula handed herself over at Lyttelton police station in Pretoria in April, after she failed in her court bid to interdict her pending arrest.

Acting Chief Magistrate Vusimuzi Mahlangu reminded the former speaker about the seriousness of the case.

“You’re currently on bail.

Your bail is extended on the condition that on 09:30 on 16 October 2024 you appear at the Pretoria High Court, and you remain in attendance until the matter is dealt with.

The bail conditions that were set on the 4th of April 2024, when you appeared in court are still in operation without any amendments,” warned Mahlangu.
