The Midvaal Local Municipality said it has embarked on an R8 million new construction project of new trading stalls aimed at empowering informal traders and restoring dignity to their daily operations.
According to the municipality, which is located
Situated within the Sedibeng District Municipality, the development will include the construction of 34 fully equipped trading stalls, an ablution facility, and an administrative office. Each stall features water and electricity access and can be securely locked after working hours to protect trader goods.
According to Midvaal mayoral spokesperson Idah Satikhe, this initiative marks a significant milestone for informal trade in the Central Business District (CBD).
“The construction of these stalls not only restores dignity for the informal traders but will also significantly improve the trading environment in the Central Business District,” said Satikhe.
For many years, informal traders in the area operated without permanent infrastructure, exposing them to harsh weather conditions that often disrupted business and led to income loss.
“Informal traders play a critical role in the municipality’s economy, as they provide not only an income to owners but also create employment opportunities,” Satikhe explained.
She further emphasised the municipality’s ongoing commitment to supporting the sector and ensuring a conducive trading environment that enables businesses to grow and thrive.
