Mop-up operations are underway at the City of Johannesburg, following overnight disruptive rainfall which affected mostly infrastructure, trapped motorists, and collapsed walls in some areas.
This after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) had issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in Gauteng, eastern parts of North West, Mpumalanga and some parts of Limpopo.
According to the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, two motorists were rescued.
“One was rescued while trying to cross Jukskei Platina Bridge, along Witkoppen Road in Jukskei Park.
The other one was rescued in Weltevreden Park.
Both motorists were trying to cross low-lying bridges,” said Mulaudzi.
He highlighted that most of the affected areas are Randpark Ridge, Newlands, Strubens Valley, Weltevreden Park, Randburg and Parkhurst.
“A wall also collapsed in Honey Bee at one of the residential complexes, but no injuries were with no injuries reported.
We also had another wall collapse in Randpark Ridge, and no injuries were reported too,” explained Mulaudzi.
Motorists are also warned to exercise caution, as some of the roads might still have debris following the rains.
Mulaudzi also pleaded with residents in low-lying areas to avoid crossing river streams while conducting their daily activities.
“As EMS we remain on high alert, monitoring all seven regions of the city for any emergencies which might occur.
Together with our monitoring teams and our specialized team, our Aquatic Rescue Unit, which is also on high alert.
All our fire stations are fully operational.
We should be able to respond to all emergencies which might occur throughout the City of Johannesburg,” remarked Mulaudzi.
The rains are expected to persist today and Friday.
