A mother and two accomplices are set to face court following the emergence of a viral video depicting a toddler smoking drugs in Newclare, West Rand. The 23-second clip shows a young boy lighting drugs for his mother, who not only encourages his actions but is also seen in the presence of several adults who cheer on the harrowing display.

The shocking footage came to the attention of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) after a concerned community member supplied a crucial tip-off. On Tuesday, officers from the JMPD K9 Unit were on routine patrol when they acted on this urgent information, specifically tracing the suspects’ whereabouts.

Upon arrival at the identified location in Newclare, officers quickly recognised the mother depicted in the footage. When questioned, she confessed and identified two other individuals involved in the incident, including the person who recorded the harrowing scene. ”All three suspects admitted to using ‘mandrax’ and acknowledged their role in filming the incident,” explained JMPD spokesperson, Superintendent Xolani Fihla.

The gravity of the situation led to the arrest of the three individuals, who now face charges of child abuse and neglect. As part of the investigation, their cellphones were confiscated for further examination. In a heartening development amid the chaos, the child has been safely removed from this detrimental environment and is now under the protective care of the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit.

JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca praised the swift action taken by law enforcement and extended gratitude to the vigilant community member whose report facilitated this rapid response. Jaca stated, “This successful operation underscores the JMPD’s unwavering commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of our society and holding accountable those who endanger them.” Both the local community and the broader South African public are now anticipating the upcoming court appearance, as justice and accountability are sought for this tragic case.
