Tiffany Meek, 31, the mother of 11-year-old Jayden-Lee Meek, will remain in custody over the weekend, as her bail application has been postponed to Monday. Meek appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg on Friday, facing serious charges including murder, crimen injuria, and efforts to defeat the ends of justice.
The charge sheet reveals disturbing details surrounding the tragic fate of young Jayden-Lee, who was found deceased on a staircase near their Fleurhof apartment. The State claims to have forensic evidence indicating that Meek struck her son with a blunt object within their home. Moreover, bloodstains were uncovered on the child’s bed, school clothes, bag, and books, further suggesting a violent altercation before the child’s body was discovered.
The investigation has also revealed allegations pointing to Meek misleading authorities by incorrectly implicating the school transport driver in her son’s disappearance. This misleading information reportedly led to a search of the driver’s home as part of the inquiry into Jayden-Lee’s death.
Emotional during her court appearance, Meek presented an affidavit asserting her innocence. She claimed she reported her son missing and accused the police of delaying the search for him. Her legal representation, private attorney Noven Naidoo, argued that she is not a flight risk and intends to fully cooperate with the judicial process.
State prosecutor Olga Mapokgole informed the court that Magistrate Annelin Africa would preside over the case, highlighting the gravity of the charges against Meek. The public’s interest in the case has grown, particularly following statements from LifeLine, an advocacy group seeking justice for children and calling for accountability in the wake of the alleged abuse.
Meek’s previous arrest occurred on 11 July at her mother’s home, with Jayden-Lee last seen alive on 13 May. As further details of this unfolding tragedy emerge, the community watches closely, hoping for justice in the face of such profound loss.
