A steady stream of mourners has been paying their final respects to the late former Deputy President David Mabuza at his family homestead, following his passing at the age of 64 due to a brief illness at a Johannesburg hospital last week. The atmosphere outside the Mabuza home has been one of reflection and unity, as members of the African National Congress (ANC) Women’s League congregated to honour his memory through a heartfelt prayer service known as Manyano.

Nokuthula Nqaba, the Secretary-General of the ANC Women’s League, emphasised Mabuza’s legacy as a unifier, saying, “Mabuza was a unifier; he made sure all the leagues were united, and that is why they are here to pay their respect.” This sentiment was echoed by many present, recalling his ability to bring people together in times of need.

Those who knew Mabuza well painted a picture of a multifaceted leader. Jacques Modipane, a former Member of the Executive Council (MEC) in Mpumalanga, described him as both an enigma and a silent operator, stating, “Mabuza was silent and never said anything, but he had his lieutenants who will do his work on the side.” That combination of humility and ambition marked him as a unique figure in South African politics.

Among the many tributes paid to Mabuza, his contributions towards women’s empowerment stood out, particularly in the realm of sports. Reginah “Mama Fish” Mokoena from the Phola Football Club reminisced about how Mabuza supported an elderly women’s soccer team by providing crucial resources such as soccer kits and boats, a testament to his commitment to uplift women in their passions.

In 2014, Mabuza took his commitment to social responsibility a step further by establishing the David Mabuza Foundation. Dedicated to education and social upliftment, the foundation has left a lasting mark on the province. As Gugu Nyarenda from the foundation explained, “In the first year, the foundation helped 3,000 children to higher education. We have built houses all over the province. He wanted to help the community.” This legacy of philanthropy and support for the disadvantaged underlines just how deeply he cared for his community.

As the mourning process continues, ANC Deputy President Paul Mashatile is expected to address one of three memorial services scheduled for Thursday, ensuring that Mabuza’s contributions and values are celebrated and remembered by all.
