25-year-old Phethe Simiao has confessed to the horrific crimes of kidnapping, raping, and murdering a young girl from Soweto. The tragic incident has devastated the local community and ignited widespread outrage across the nation. Amantle Samane, a bright and beloved six-year-old, disappeared from her home in Orlando West in October last year. Days later, her lifeless body was discovered in the residence of Simiao, located in Orlando East.

This shocking revelation sent ripples of despair through the community that had hoped for her safe return.During the sentencing hearing, Judge William Karam delivered a powerful statement, underscoring the gravity of Simiao’s actions.

“This court is of the view that the following are proper and just sentences in the circumstances. On count 1, the kidnapping of a child, you’re sentenced to 2 years; on count 2, for the murder of a minor child, you are sentenced to life imprisonment; on count 3, for the rape of the minor child, you are sentenced to life imprisonment; and on count 4, contravening the immigration act by remaining unlawfully, you’re sentenced to 2 years.”

Judge Karam further clarified that, under the law, all sentences imposed will run concurrently with the life sentences, highlighting the seriousness of the crimes committed against the innocent girl. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the ruling, voicing their approval of the two life sentences delivered to Simiao.

“There is a difference between remorse and regret,” said Phindi Mjonondwane, Gauteng NPA Regional spokesperson.

“The accused was rather feeling sorry for himself rather than feeling guilty and sorry for the crimes he has committed and how it affected the family of the little girl. We are happy with his sentence as the NPA.”
