In a grim discovery that has sent shockwaves through the community, the mutilated body of a 14-year-old girl was found in Roodepoort, Gauteng, on Sunday. Police have launched a murder investigation following the alarming finding, which is reminiscent of previous violent crimes in the area.

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that the body was unearthed in an open veld by a passer-by who prompted authorities to investigate. “The police are investigating a case of murder following the discovery of a body of a 14-year-old teenage girl at Durban Deep,” she stated.

The incident has drawn significant attention and concern, particularly due to its chilling similarities with the case of Tshegofatso Pule, whose body was found in the same vicinity back in June 2020. Pule was eight months pregnant at the time of her tragic death, which sparked widespread outrage and demands for justice.

Officials have expressed their deep distress over the recent murder. “Resources have been mobilised to ensure that the culprits responsible for this heinous attack are behind bars and brought to book.” In a concerted effort to catch those responsible, police have urged anyone with information to reach out to the Crime Stop line at 08600 10111.

One notable reaction came from the Tshegofatso Pule Foundation, which voiced their horror and dismay at the recent incident. Botlhale Modisane, a representative of the foundation, reflected on the emotional turmoil that this new case brings. “It is something that is so heartbreaking. We cannot even begin to wrap our heads around how to console the family or how to make sense of all of this because why would somebody want to do this to a 14-year-old?” Modisane lamented.

She further noted the timing of the tragedy, as it occurs just three days before the commemoration of Pule’s death, intensifying the community’s anguish. “For us, it’s also rehashing memories and the emotional turmoil that we went through with Tshegofatso Pule,” Modisane added.

As investigations progress, the community remains on edge, grappling with the loss of a young life stolen too soon and the unending question of safety in their neighbourhood.
