Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has dismissed Agriculture Minister Mac-Albert Hengari from his position, effective April 23, 2025. The decision was announced by the president’s office on Sunday and comes amidst an ongoing investigation into allegations of rape involving a minor.

The dismissal marks a seismic shift in the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Land Reform, where Hengari had served since his appointment. Accusations have surfaced that Hengari may face not only allegations of rape but also potential charges of abduction and abortion, both of which carry severe penalties under Namibian law. A spokesperson for the police has confirmed that an investigation is actively underway, prompted by allegations made by the minor.

This significant decision is particularly notable as Nandi-Ndaitwah, Namibia’s first female president, had taken office just weeks prior in March 2025. Known as a veteran figure in the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO), the ruling party of Namibia since independence in 1990, Nandi-Ndaitwah’s strong stance on this matter illustrates her dedication to upholding justice and maintaining the integrity of her administration during a politically sensitive time.

As public scrutiny intensifies and calls for accountability mount, Nandi-Ndaitwah’s leadership will be tested in navigating this turbulent situation. The president’s decision to remove Hengari highlights a zero-tolerance approach towards allegations of sexual violence, a critical issue in Namibia and across the continent.

With Hengari’s removal, attention now turns to the ramifications of the investigation and its impact on the future of Namibia’s political landscape.
