The National Treasury has assured that the servers that were compromised by an attempted malware invasion on its Infrastructure Reporting Model (IRM), have been isolated.
This after it managed to block an attempted malware attack on the IRM website, which triggered an immediate response.
Through a press release, the department indicated that it would assess IRM servers to evaluate the extent of this attempted breach as well as strengthen its cybersecurity mechanisms.
“Considering recent media reports since Sunday regarding security incidents affecting Microsoft platforms in the United States, National Treasury has requested Microsoft’s assistance in identifying and addressing any potential vulnerabilities within its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) environment,” read the statement.
Despite this, Treasury assured that its online systems remain operative without any disruptions.
“National Treasury’s ICT department processes over 200 000 emails each day and facilitates more than 400 000 user connections through their websites daily.
On average, the National Treasury team successfully detects and blocks approximately 5 800 security threats directed at National Treasury systems everyday highlighting the department’s commitment to maintaining a secure digital environment,” added the statement.
Some of the vulnerabilities caused by malware include stealing sensitive data, disrupting operations, gaining unauthorised access, and spying on individuals or organisations.
According to the tech-company, hackers also targeted some private companies, and several countries including Spain, Canada, Brazil, USA, Britain, Indonesia, and Switzerland amongst others.
