NCC announces recall of 372 Volvo EX30 vehicles over battery fire risk

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has on Wednesday issued a recall notice for 372 Volvo EX30 vehicles in South Africa, following a notification from Volvo Car South Africa.

The recall affects certain Volvo EX30 Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor Performance models from the 2024 to 2026 model years.

Thr NCC in a statement said the vehicles were sold from 29 December 2025, mainly in Gauteng.

It said according to Volvo Car South Africa, the recall is linked to a potential defect in the high-voltage (HV) battery system. In rare cases, the battery may overheat when charged to a high level, which could lead to a thermal event and pose a fire risk.

As a precautionary measure, owners of affected vehicles have been advised to limit their vehicle’s maximum charge level to 70% until a permanent fix is implemented.

The NCC has urged consumers to take the recall seriously and to contact their nearest authorised Volvo dealership to arrange an inspection and necessary repairs. Volvo Car South Africa has confirmed that all corrective work related to the recall will be conducted at no cost to consumers.

Vehicle recalls are issued when manufacturers identify safety-related defects that could pose a risk to drivers, passengers, or the public. The NCC oversees such recalls in South Africa to ensure consumer safety and compliance with the Consumer Protection Act. Volvo, known for its focus on safety, regularly issues precautionary recalls globally when potential risks are identified, even if incidents are rare.
