The 1997 blockbuster, Titanic, is set to return to the streaming platform, Netflix on July 1 2023 following the recent tragedy involving OceanGate where 5 passengers on board the capsule perished after it exploded at the bottom of the sea.
While some viewers feel that the timing is completely off and accuse the streaming platform of securing the bag from an unfortunate incident, NetflixLife justified its return describing the timing as a coincidence, citing that scheduling is determined by license deals made well in advance.
The classical blockbuster Titanic, starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet and directed by James Cameron is a romantic adventure and tells the love story of a couple who met on a ship’s maiden voyage.
The ship was presumed ‘’unsinkable’’ by the owners but then struck an iceberg and sank on April 15, 1912 and in the movie, it goes down with both Winslet and Di Caprio.
Titanic proved to be very popular, holding the all-time box-office gross record for more than a decade after its release.
The return of Titanic comes just a few days after the implosion of a submersible that had 5 passengers onboard and was on a paid voyage to see the Titanic wreckage.
The crew on that submarine included British billionaire, Hamish Harding, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, Pakistani entrepreneur Shahzada Dawood and his 19- year-old son, Suleman and French diver Paul-Henry Nargeolet.
They were declared dead after the US Coast Guard announced the discovery of a debris field that had been found more than 12000 feet underwater.
The buzz around the catastrophe also skyrocketed streams of the movie’s theme song, ‘’My heart will go on’’, by Celine Dion on Spotify. According to various reports, the song received nearly 8-million streams.
Given the events of the film and the discovery that the tourists onboard each paid $250,000 (R4,686,320.00) for the trip, it triggered conversations about wealth, classism and empathy.
While the count-down to its landing on Netflix next month starts, Titanic is already available on Paramount and Amazon Prime.
