The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane said she’s confident that the appointment of a new National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) board, will help turnaround the situation at the scheme.

The scheme was placed under administration in April last year, by the Department’s former Minister, Dr Blade Nzimande after dissolving the previous board due to alleged incompetence.

Dr Nkabane believes the new board will bolster efficiency, accountability and transparency in the sector.

“NSFAS is a critical institution requiring the highest expertise and ethical leadership.

The qualification standards for board appointments have been significantly raised to achieve this.

NSFAS is managed by individuals with the necessary expertise to navigate financial and administrative complexities while upholding transparency and efficiency.

In line with this commitment, the board’s composition reflects the values of inclusivity, youth empowerment, and gender representation,” said Dr Nkabane.

The Minister also sought to assure the public that the selected board members come highly accomplished and with the necessary experience.

“Members appointed to the board possess a minimum qualification of a master’s degree and extensive professional experience in finance, law, engineering, or governance.

The newly appointed members meet the stringent qualification requirements and embody a diverse and representative leadership team dedicated to transforming higher education funding,” explained the Minister.

This development coincides with the 2025 academic year which is currently underway, where NSFAS and the Department continue to collaborate to address issues related to the disbursement of student registration fees, allowances and accommodation.
