It was an emotional and historic day for Noko Matlou, the celebrated stalwart of South Africa’s women’s football team, Banyana Banyana. The 39-year-old defender, who made headlines as the first South African woman to be honoured with the Women’s CAF African Player of the Year award, displayed a commanding performance as the team prepared for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Matlou, who captained the side in their friendly match against Malawi, helped lead Banyana Banyana to a comprehensive 3-0 victory at the UJ Stadium in Soweto on Saturday afternoon. The match, which was more than just a precursor to their continental undertaking, also marked a poignant farewell for Matlou, who is set to hang up her boots after an illustrious career spanning 174 caps, making her the second most capped player in the national team’s history.

Under the leadership of head coach Desiree Ellis, Banyana Banyana showcased their attacking prowess, netting three goals without reply, impressively dominating the field against Malawi. The team’s fluid play and cohesive strategy were evident, a further testament to Ellis’s dedication and the players’ commitment as they ramp up their preparations for the tournament.

As the whistle blew to signal the end of the match, it was clear that the day was not solely about the victory but also a heartfelt tribute to Matlou’s immense contributions. Her journey not only paved the way for future generations of female footballers in South Africa but also left an indelible mark on the sport. As she takes her final bow with the national team, fans, teammates, and opponents alike reflected on her incredible legacy that transcends the pitch.

Banyana Banyana’s performance in this friendly has set a positive tone as they gear up for the challenges ahead in Morocco. With Matlou’s leadership and experience, the team hopes to build upon this victorious foundation and strive for excellence on the continental stage.
