Several schools at the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality in the North West are in a state of disrepair and the North West MEC for Education Viola Motsumi has promised that her department is going to work hard to renovate the affected schools.
Motsumi was speaking in Klerksdorp where she visited four schools after she had requested residents through her Facebook page to tell her about the schools that had challenges of infrastructure, stationery, and shortage of teachers.
Motsumi said one of the common issues that she has found in all these schools is the issue of infrastructure.
“In Tshedimosano secondary school, I am not going to lie, the conditions are very bad. We must prioritise the safety of our learners. So we have committed as the department that we are going to try our level best in making sure that the relevant directorate comes and does assessment in all these particular schools and do minor renovations so that the condition and environment is conducive for learning,” she said.
Motsumi also raised concerns about a high number of children who could not register in different schools due to overcrowding.
“Most of the parents choose to go to schools in January to register their children there. We are not going to have a situation whereby a learner is denied education. We have established admission hubs where all those learners who are still unplaced, names must be at that hub for placement in other schools.
“We are dealing with the issues of a number of educators and we are trying our level best in making sure that we don’t have overcrowding in classes because it is the very same community that is complaining about overcrowding. How will we achieve better results, quality results while we are having overcrowded classes,” she asked.
