Acting Premier of the North West Nono Maloyi has fired Social Development MEC Boitumelo Moiloa who had been on suspension after falling out with the Head of the Department (HOD) Relebohile Mafokane.

The ANC’s provincial deputy chairperson, Lazie Mokgosi has been appointed as the new Social Development MEC. The fallout between Moiloa and her HOD was over a security tender alleged to have been awarded irregularly.

Moiloa said the department had established prima-facie information, which alleged Mafokane signed off an R133 million security tender and ignored the Provincial Internal Audit’s warning about some discrepancies in bidding documents.

Maloyi the HOD will remain on leave until next month.

“I wish to take this opportunity to inform the people of the North West of my decision in terms of Section 132 (2) of the Constitution of the Republic to effect changes in the composition of the Provincial Executive Council by releasing Honourable Boitumelo Moiloa from her position as a Member of the Executive responsible for Social Development.

“Honourable Lazarus Mokgosi will take over as the new MEC for Social Development with effect from 12 July 2023. The HOD for the Department, Mr. Relebohile Mafokane remains on leave. Acting HOD Mongale will continue with his acting role until the end of July 2023.

“The intervention is making positive progress and nearing completion. The public will be informed in due course of the outcome of various areas of intervention in the Department. I wish to take this opportunity to thank Honorable Moiloa for her contribution during her tenure as MEC. I congratulate the new MEC and wish him all of the best as he assumes his new position as a Member of the Executive Council responsible for Social Development,” Maloyi said.

Moiloa who is a member of both the ANC and the South African Communist Party (SACP) started serving as a MEC for Social Development in May 2019. This after she was sworn in as a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature in August 2013.
