The North West Education says it is yet to establish the cause of the fire that engulfed an administration block at Boitsanape Technical High School in Mahikeng on Saturday.

The fire is said to have damaged computers, photocopy machines, furniture and textbooks, which will take millions of rands to replace.

The Provincial education spokesperson, Maphata Molokwane, said neighboring schools will be used to ensure exams are not affected.

“The cause of the fire is still unknown. It is reported that around 16:00 in the afternoon the principal was alerted by another teacher that the administration block was on fire. Upon his arrival at the school the fire department was already at the school extinguishing the fire.

“The fire damaged 2 computers, 5 huge photocopying machines, textbooks, and office furniture. The fire damages are estimated to be several millions of rands.

“This is a real drawback for the department especially now during a critical period of the mid-year examination. As the department we can guarantee the parents that the examinations will not be affected by this incident, as neighboring schools will be assisting the school for the next three days of the exams,” Molokwane said.

The incident comes in the middle of matric exams, which are scheduled to be concluded on Wednesday.
